A Little Note on Self Love
Hello my lovelies! Happy Friday to you all. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air here in Paris. And in light of that I wanted to share an outfit with you that was not only cute, sweet and elegant, but also the perfect ensemble for a special date with yourself, a loved one, or even an evening out with friends.
As with every year on Valentine’s Day, there comes the over-saturation of soppy couples on social media which often makes it so easy to feel down and out about not having an SO to celebrate with. It’s for this reason that I decided to devote today’s post entirely to self-love. Whether you may be in a relationship or not, self-love is such an important skill that has such a powerful influence over the way we live our lives.
However it’s something so many of us can so easily overlook and neglect to do. But what better time is there to appreciate who we are than on Valentine’s Day, right?
Here are my top tips for self-love as well as a little outfit for you. Let’s start!
This is the type of outfit that I just love to parade around Paris. A key closet essential of any Parisian is a classic leather jacket and worn over this black and red dress, I really feel like it really creates such an alluring contrast between a look that is both edgy and romantic.
My signature piece today is this mini handbag from Coach, embellished with a gold chain as the strap to add some luxe to the outfit as well a gold engraving which inspired the title for today’s post. While the array of fabrics between my fishnet tights and wool beret make for both warmth and texture, they equally add a little bit of quirkiness to the look while constantly keeping things classy.
Of course it’s no secret that no real Parisian would ever be seen dead wearing a beret, but I couldn’t help myself from completing this outfit with this adorable red one. Even before moving here I’ve always been completely and utterly enamoured by this typical French cliché and while you may risk looking like a tourist by sporting the beret in Paris, matching it to your outfit will always make it fashion.
While there can be no doubt that the way we dress has a monumental impact on the image we have of ourselves, there’s so many other factors that contribute to how we take care of ourselves. As promised, here are my tips on self-love.
Love Yourself as Much as You Want Somebody Else To
This one is probably the most relevant right now given the time of year. But if you don’t treat yourself right, how could you ever expect anyone else to? Spend time with yourself. Go for walks, take yourself on dates, choose the scenic route home and most importantly, accept yourself for who you are. The happiest people know themselves the best and what better way is there to do that other than to spend your time treating yourself to the things you love doing? Being alone doesn’t mean being lonely and when you start to do more for yourself, you’ll unlock a new found confidence you never even knew you had.
Take Time Out For Yourself
Live for pleasure and not for pain. Hard work is rewarding but being constantly exhausted is just plain misery. Obtaining a work/life balance is something I used to struggle with a lot and I notice this problem to be particularly reoccurring, especially among the friends I have at uni. The truth about working ourselves into the ground is that it only creates the illusion of productivity when in reality all we’re doing is making ourselves suffer and zapping our motivation.
Taking time out for ourselves to recharge in our busy lives is just so important. Read a book, make a cup of tea and put your feet up with Netflix, or go to that party at the weekend with your friends. Though it may feel like your work is suffering now, your physical and mental health, energy levels and even the overall quality of your work in the long run will thank you later for this little bit of extra self-care.
Realize What You Love in Life and Learn To Master It
Whenever I overcome a difficult obstacle in life or face up to a challenge I never even thought I could be capable of surmounting, that’s when I look in the mirror and feel pretty. And no amount of makeup or any wardrobe filled with expensive clothes could ever measure up to that.
So much of our self worth comes from the things we accomplish because it’s in those moments that we realize what we’re capable of achieving. This is why finding something (not someone) you can really put your heart and soul into is just so gratifying. Nothing will ever bring you nearly as much self-assurance as working hard and cultivating your passions in life. And if you don’t live for that then what else are you living for?
Acknowledge That Doing What Everyone Else is Doing Won’t Make You Happy
Our time on Earth is limited so it’s just so important to know when to go against the crowd and reach for what we really want. So many people are stuck feeling miserable living the same life because it’s what they feel like they are supposed to be doing. And it’s such a waste of who you are not to work hard at what you dream of everyday. You are completely free to do whatever you want in the world and better yet, you are ABLE to do whatever it is you want to do. So why be like everyone else if it’s not going to make you happy?
So many of us fear failure but a lot of the time the actual pursuit of something is just as satisfying as the end goal. Success comes in small steps and when those tiny accomplishments start to build something little by little, you’ll be even more proud of yourself than ever now that you’ve chosen to pave the road less travelled. Just be patient with yourself and learn not to care about what others think of you. Pretty soon they’ll be the ones wishing they were in your shoes.
Know That Life Is Only A Temporary Thing
Life is precious and it can be gone in the blink of an eye. It’s important to remember that without you, your life doesn’t exist. Appreciate the little things and realize how lucky you are to be in this world. Whatever it is that makes you feel good, be it spending time with the people who matter to you, taking yourself to your favourite cafe every now and again or expanding your knowledge on your interests, be sure to do it.
We only get one chance on this Earth so you might as well make the most of it. As fleeting as life is, you’re stuck with yourself for the entire ride so why not spend it choosing what makes you happy?
