Let’s Talk About 2017

My 2017 In Review

It’s hard to believe that the last timeI updated my blog was on New Year’s Eve. Thinking about how fast my time in Ireland flew by over the Christmas break is a bit daunting but honestly I’m so happy to be back in Paris and to be writing our first post here on our blog from the top floor of my brand new Parisian apartment.

I’m not going to lie when I say that 2017 really was one of the best years of my life so far, if not the best one yet. Throughout the year I had so many amazing opportunities to find myself, who I really was and what really made me happy. Not only that, but I also started to make better decisions for myself and overcome some really ballsy goals I set for myself that I’m pretty proud of. Today I wanted to sum up my 2017 for you guys and maybe it’ll give you some inspiration for the new year. Let’s start!

1.) I Left College For the Year

This was a decision that nobody in my life except for me was happy about at the time. When I was in high school I always felt like I was really in my element just by being able to see my friends every single day and getting good grades in all of my tests was so rewarding at the time. But then in college something happened. It was as if I was the only person who fell flat on my face when trying to decide my direction in life. Everybody else seemed to hit the ground running after the Leaving Cert and I felt like they were miles ahead of me in their careers… law, medicine, business, economics… all of the things I tried to make myself interested in so I could have a good job in the future. Of course feeling so lost in life, when it came to choosing my course I stupidly signed the next 4 years of my life away by committing to an arts degree I had no interest in because that’s what people kept telling me was best for me. It didn’t take long for me to realize once classes had started that I had made a huge mistake in my life, so midway through the year I decided to take a break from college and figure stuff out.

Being outside the academia bubble and finding my own way in the world throughout the year was such an awesome experience. Trusting in my gut by taking that leap of faith that nobody made me feel comfortable doing at the time was honestly the best thing I could have done for my own self-growth. Somehow I became more lively and motivated than ever and I got to accomplish some unique things that my friends didn’t have the opportunities to do because of their studies.

2.) I Got A Fashion Certificate from Parsons x Teen Vogue

The best thing about 2017 was that taking a year out of college enabled me to figure out my passions. I didn’t have my university trying to tell me what was important and what made a person an intellectual anymore. Fashion has always been something that has inspired and empowered not only me but so many people in the world. And so many of the most renowned historical figures in the world and the people who inspired change are fashion icons. Between the sheer amount of hard work and commitment that goes into the production of fashion magazines each month to the processes involved in becoming a fashion designer, so many concepts of the industry  have always fascinated me. So of course wanting to know more about it I decided to do the Teen Vogue Online Course in fashion. Getting to know the ins and outs of the industry between design, production and even the way clothes on retail displays are marketed to us was just so cool. It felt like for the first time in a while I was learning about something that really interested me. And this was knowledge I could apply to my everyday life and blog too.

3.) I Worked My First Full-Time Job

And of course it was in fashion retail too. Doing a course in fashion really helped me get hired and I’m now lucky enough to say that my first proper job was on Grafton Street in Dublin. How cool is that? When I left college people were joking about how they would see me over the counter in McDonald’s but I got to work in the centre of a city that has such a special place in my heart and in a place that inspired me and learn a lot about the business side of fashion too.

Earning my own money for the first time was pretty amazing too. Being able to buy the things I previously never could have even dreamed of affording out of my own pocket was just too rewarding. And I also got to travel to so many new and exciting places too, which brings me onto my next point.

4.) I Moved From Dublin to Paris

This obviously was a huge change in my life. The only reason that I decided to go back to college in the end was so that I could have the opportunity to study abroad. And what better city in the world is there to do that other than Paris? In the beginning moving was the most daunting thing I had ever done in my whole life. I came here knowing nobody. I could barely string a sentence together in French and I was leaving everyone I loved back in Ireland overseas.

Flash-forward not even 4 months into my 12 months abroad and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve made amazing friends and have learned so much more French than I ever did in any classroom just by going to bars and parties and hanging out with people who speak the language and help me every step along the way. Of course Dublin will always be like home but feeling like you belong in two completely different places in the world is a pretty amazing feeling and one I’m so grateful 2017 brought to me. If you ever get the chance to live abroad definitely go for it. My personal experience so far has been amazing and it’s given me so many new experiences I never even knew I could have.

5.) We Got Sponsored for The First Time

I know a lot of people have a tendency to scoff at the idea of bloggers making money for their content but as a creator myself, being offered for the first time to do brand promotions and being sent free products, including clothes to model was a dream come true! It’s amazing to think that companies find the blog that I made worthy of promoting their products and getting to do this was a huge honor. Hopefully now it’ll happen more in 2018!

6.) We Started a YouTube Channel

In 2017 I tried my hand at YouTube but since stopped making videos. However when I was uploading, I got so much enjoyment out of it! Especially when I was putting lookbooks together and making makeup videos. YouTube is something I’ve always had an interest in and making videos, though very tiring, I have to say was a lot of fun. What was super cool though was when Marzia ended up liking one of my videos and it showed up on her channel! Whether I’ll continue this in 2018 I’m still undecided. It’s been four months since I last uploaded anything and although I know my content has potential, I think for the moment I enjoy blogging more. But we’ll see what happens I guess :’)

7.) I Rented My First Apartment

I’ll be honest when I say that as far as student residences go, it was pretty pleasant. But it definitely didn’t feel like home. Finding somewhere new to live was pretty difficult but now that I have my own space (though only half the size of my previous place) I definitely feel a hundred times more comfortable, much more homely and more ready than ever to continue the year here in France.

And that’s it for my 2017 in review! I realize that this post was pretty long and all over the place in comparison to others. But this year was just full of so many amazing things. Honestly the minute you decide to take charge of your own life and start making active decisions for yourself is the minute your life changes for the better. You don’t need to follow what everyone else around you is doing just because it makes them happy. Whatever it is that makes you want to discover yourself and learn more is the path you should follow. Even if it is wildly different to what is making your friends successful.

Taking this into account, I wish you guys all the best for 2018.

This post was a little personal to me. Can you guys relate to anything? Let me know in the comments below! Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you very soon in my next post.
